Experienced Exhibitor Crash Course: Network Like a Pro
Welcome to another Experienced Exhibitor Crash Course class. This is part of our series “Exhibiting Strategy 101: Key Considerations When Designing a Trade Show Booth”
The Experienced Exhibitor highlights crucial considerations to keep in mind when designing your trade show booth to ensure it stands out and delivers results. This week we want you to Network Like a Pro!
Networking at a trade show or conference is a valuable opportunity to build connections, generate leads, and foster relationships. Here are some expert tips to help you make the most of your time:
Preparation Before the Event
- Set Clear Goals: Know what you want to achieve—whether it’s generating leads, finding potential partners, or staying updated on industry trends.
- Research Attendees and Exhibitors: Use the event's website or app to identify key people or companies you want to meet. Prepare a list and prioritize your top targets.
- Bring Business Cards: Have plenty of professional, updated cards ready to distribute. Consider using QR codes to drive them to a custom event-related landing page on your website. Give them all the info they need to remember who you are and what you may have discussed or shared.
- Prepare an Elevator Pitch: Be ready to introduce yourself and your business in a concise, engaging way. Make sure to practice!
- Leverage Social Media: Announce your attendance on platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and use the event's hashtags to connect with other attendees. Make sure to include your booth site number so people can find you!
At the Event
- Engage Early: Arrive early to avoid crowds and engage with exhibitors or attendees when they’re fresh and energetic.
- Be Approachable: Smile, maintain open body language, and be ready to initiate conversations. Standing at a booth or mingling in common areas is better than sitting off to the side.
- Ask Open-Ended Questions: This keeps conversations flowing and shows genuine interest. Examples:
- “What brought you to this event?”
- “What challenges are you facing in your business?”
- Listen More Than You Speak: People appreciate being heard, and it allows you to tailor your responses to their needs.
- Offer Value: Share useful insights, offer introductions, or recommend resources. This builds goodwill and positions you as helpful. If possible have some ideas prepared for quick recall!
- Leverage Networking Opportunities: Attend breakout sessions, workshops, or social mixers to meet people in more casual settings.
At Your Booth
- Create an Inviting Space: Use a professional, visually appealing setup with clear messaging. Offer interactive elements like demos or samples to draw attention. Make sure to check other Experienced Exhibitor Crash Courses for ideas and guidance.
- Have a Lead Capture System: Use tools like a badge scanner, forms, or apps to collect visitor details and notes about their interests.
- Be Proactive: Don’t wait for people to approach you—greet them warmly as they pass by.
Follow-Up After the Event
- Send Personalized Messages: Within a few days, follow up with people you met. Reference something specific from your conversation to make the message memorable.
- Connect on LinkedIn: Add new contacts with a short message reminding them of your meeting.
- Nurture Leads: For potential customers or partners, offer additional resources or set up a meeting to continue the conversation.
- Evaluate Your Performance: Reflect on what worked well and what could be improved for your next event.
Always consider…
- Stay hydrated and energized—trade shows can be long and demanding.
- Have a notepad or use a phone app to jot down key points after each interaction.
- Be authentic and approachable. People are more likely to connect with someone who’s genuine and relatable.
